Iron Line Mapping of Cluster of Galaxies and the Effect of ResonanceScattering

Fumie Akimoto, Y. Tawara, A. Furuzawa, A. Kumada and K. Yamashita

Abstract

Five clusters of galaxies, A496, A644, A3266, Virgo Cluster(M87) and Perseus Cluster were observed with ASCA satellite. It is confirmed that temperatures are cool at the center from the thermal continuum, and abundances are enhanced at the center from iron Ka lines except for A644 and A3266. Intensity ratios of Ka to Kb line are found to be smaller at the center than ones expected in optically thin plasmas and increase as the radial distance. Then, by simulating the effect of resonance scattering to 41 lines, we show the effect is qualitatively favorable but cannot yet explain all small observed ratios.
