X線と可視光との吸収について
例えば、鉛筆の芯とダイアモンドについてみてみます。両方とも同じ「
炭素」という元素からできています(結合状態が異なる)。可視光に対し
ては、鉛筆の芯の方は透過しないけれどダイアモンドは透過します。しか
しX線に対しては、鉛筆の芯であろうとダイアモンドであろうとX線のゆ
く先に炭素原子がいくつ存在するかということだけに吸収される量が依存
します。このようにX線は原子と直接相互作用するので可視光では透明な
大気でも、X線にとってはたくさんの窒素原子と酸素原子に邪魔されるこ
とになります。そのため、宇宙から来るX線を見ようと思ったら大気の層
よりも外側にいく必要があります。
